Why study this course?
English Language is a diverse and dynamic subject with a wealth of riches on offer. It is highly relevant and current, constantly changing and challenging us on a daily basis. It will provide you with the opportunity to discuss and debate a wide range of topics from gender issues to representation, from language development to language change. Ever wondered how and why we communicate in the ways that we do? English Language explores the different forms, media, audiences, purposes and contexts associated with a variety of interactions. Studying it will enable a deeper appreciation of words and meanings, and consequently cultivate a broader understanding of the role language plays in our lives.
Sandbach College at Sandbach High School Entry Requirements
We ask that all students achieve grade 4 or equivalent (a Level 2 pass) in at least 4 subjects, alongside the following subject specific entry requirements:
- Grade 5 in GCSE English
What will I learn on this course?
In English Language, you will acquire the skills and the confidence to learn, develop, analyse and evaluate the words we use in myriad contexts for a multitude of purposes. You will discover how language creates meanings and how language is used to represent people, places, ideas and events; how our language is influenced by a range of contextual factors such as gender, age, class, sexuality, accent, dialect, race and ethnicity; how children’s language develops; how language has changed over time; how and why people have different attitudes to language and the significance of Global English. In the NEA, you will have the opportunity to investigate an area of language that interests you as well as produce a piece of creative writing.
